Epistemic Borderwork: Violent Pushbacks, Refugees, and the Politics of Knowledge at the EU Border

Borders are sites of epistemic struggle. Focusing on the illegal tactic “pushback,” which is routinely deployed by state authorities to forcefully expel asylum seekers from European Union territory without due process, this article explores uneven politics knowledge that helps support or unsettle clandestine border violence. Drawing long-term qualitative research Croatia–Bosnia border, including interviews with pushback survivors and activists, as well a database violence reports, we explore competing truth claims epistemologies help conceal, counter, regime. Informed postcolonial perspectives contributing political geographies violence, argue “epistemic violence” (Spivak 1988) central feature contemporary borders. We propose borderwork regularly used silence unwanted voices, undermine insurgent perspectives, stifle capacity refugees draw attention their own mistreatment.
